Michael Useem, Professor of Management and Director of the Center for Leadership and Change at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, will speak on what we can learn about contemporary leadership by witnessing how commanding officers led during the great battles of the Civil War. As part of the Wharton leadership development programs, Mike frequently visits the Gettysburg and Antietam battlefields with both MBA students and mid-career managers, and he will draw from that experience as well as his research to lead a discussion of military leadership during the Civil War and its lessons for our own times. Copies of two of his leadership books that include chapters on Civil War leadership, along with an article on what business can learn from the armed services that recently appeared in the Harvard Business Review, will be provided to all who join the event.
